September 2018

Dear Members, Friends & Supporters,

As summer winds to a close NMWIF is gearing up for some great events to support our community of filmmakers. On the afternoon of September 30th, we will be introducing our Power of Story event in Albuquerque at the UNM Continuing Ed. Campus. From 3-6 there will be a series of presentations, short films, storytellers and story sharing as a part of “How Stories Connect Us”. We want to reach every aspect of the industry represented in our membership and since storytelling is the one thread that runs through all of our work we are looking to dive deeper into the meaning and structures of stories with lots of examples. This should be a great afternoon of sharing, learning and connecting. All are welcome and we hope you’ll bring friends. More information about the afternoon is detailed in the events section of the newsletter.

Former board member and award-winning filmmaker, Cat Pilafas will be heading up this year’s PSA production benefiting Enlace Comunitario, a nonprofit group that’s dedicated to preventing violence in the home. She will be partnering with Jocelyn Jansons and New Mexico Girls Make Movies to create meaningful mentorship opportunities for everyone involved in this year’s PSA. They are looking for crew in all aspects of production. New Mexico Women in Film is dedicated to expanding our responsibility as mentors in our state. Here is your opportunity to step up and bring whatever expertise you hold to our women future filmmakers both young and mature. The PSA is always a wonderful chance to connect to the fellow filmmakers in the community and develop relationships and a lasting connection that can be helpful in your future ventures. Check the newsletter here for more details. We are also creating mentor and mentee relationship opportunities at all levels for members on a special Facebook page where you can ask and share advise and experience.

NMWIF’s scholarship and grants program finished accepting applications on August 31st. It’s our great privilege to be able to help our members with funds to support their education, completion of film projects and general career development. Monies will be awarded in October with a big ceremony to celebrate the grantees along with our 2018 Sage Award winner at our holiday party in December.

Mark your calendars for one of the most anticipated dates of our NMWIF year. Saturday, November 10th will be our Mentor Mania this year and it will feature Casting Directors who will be able to meet with our actor members in a structure that resembles speed dating. Slots are limited and will again be made available to our members on a first come, first served basis. Stay connected with us through Facebook and the newsletter to get the most up-to-date information.

When you aren’t making the most of our beautiful New Mexico climate, geography and light at this glorious time of year we hope to see you at our events and

Keep Making Media,

Christine McHugh,
NMWIF President
