Dear Members, Friends & Supporters,
January was an amazing month with the Women’s March and our corresponding premier of our latest PSA for Tewa Women United. The program featured women and Native American filmmakers in a line-up of short films that would have made any big film festival proud! Thanks to Leslie Fleming Mitchell for producing this PSA and all those who contributed to making it such a great event. Remember, the PSA is an opportunity for you to collaborate with the wonderful women of NMWIF and build your resume in the process. We will be announcing our 2018 PSA in the coming months and we hope you’ll take advantage of this great opportunity.
We’re speeding into an incredible February and all of the attendant excitement of NM Film and TV Week from the 6th – 12th. NMWIF will be participating in many meaningful ways and we hope you’ll join us. On Thursday, February 8 at 3:00 at the Jean Cocteau Cinema as a part of the Santa Fe Film Festival we will be hosting a screening of two movies that expose the root causes of the culture of disrespect for women in which we currently find ourselves mired. The two documentaries by Jennifer Seibel Newsom, Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In are vitally important movies that bring to our consciousness all of the destructive messages that our children are inundated with in our society from the sexualization and objectification of girls and women in the media to the vilification of the balanced feminine aspect of boys and men. This showing is free to all NMWIF members upon presenting their membership cards at the door. We are also making these films free to local high school students with school I.D. Please spread the word about this event on social media and to all of the high school students you know. They are our most influential audience as it will be their generation who has the greatest power to turn things around. Check out the trailers for both movies here…

We hope everyone who is free can attend as it’s the perfect introduction to the panel that NMWIF will be hosting on Film and TV Day for the legislature on Monday, February 12th. It’s “Turning The Tide on Sexual Harassment – A Path Forward” and it will be featuring the host of the Well Woman show, Giovanna Rossi Presley, NM State Rep., Nathan Small, NM Girls Make Movies, Jocelyn Jansons, Board President of Taos nonprofit, Youth Heartline, Wiz Allred and NM Secretary of State, Maggie Toulouse Oliver all talking about constructive actions that can be taken to turn around a toxic culture and build a future that is safe and fair for all people in New Mexico. We are honored to have such an illustrious panel sharing with us their ideas of a productive path forward. We expect to see you all at Film and TV Day at the Roundhouse from 8:30 to 3:00 and then we hope you’ll join us at The CCA at 3:00 on Monday, February 12th for this wonderful discussion. It’s your involvement as a member at these events that makes NMWIF an influential advocate for all women in our industry.
Looking forward to seeing you this month and
Keep Making Media,
