First in NM Feature Production

The Dark Places is being produced in partnership between Duchy Parade Films & The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) and in association with Native Hope Media and SFCC. This will be the first drama feature produced by IAIA. “In an unprecedented first, we’ve decided to shoot the film as a special topic so students can be involved for grade and stretch the pre-production stage to allow for greater training built in around the production.” Peter Kershaw NMWIF member and writer/director of The Dark Places.

The feature film The Dark Places is a magical realism contemporary love story set in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The film reflects the character of Santa Fe and the diversity of inhabitants that make up the community and the experience of living in New Mexico.

The ethos of the production is to create a new educational model for producing low budget feature films in places of learning with budgets of less than $250K under the guidelines of the manifesto - Dogma NM 18.  The Dark Places will include a large representation of Native Americans in front of and behind the camera. The film is being crewed by professional Keys working alongside students with industry mentors attached. Right now, for example, IAIA student Laura Hinman is scouting locations while being mentored by industry legend Todd Christensen.

Currently, we’ve entered a soft pre-production phase with a hard pre-production kicking off in spring 2019 and shooting slated for June/July 2019.

You can contact Peter Kershaw at - pkershaw@iaia.edu or follow the film’s progress on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheDarkPlaces to learn more about the production.

Stanislavsky called Michael Chekhov, nephew of playwright Anton Chekhov, his most brilliant student.  Chekhov led the Second Moscow Art Theatre for many years, teaching and directing through techniques he developed to address what he considered limitations in Stanislavsky’s approach.  The tools he invented inspire the actor’s work and imagination through movement, the resulting physical memory of sensations, and the focusing of the actor’s concentration on the movement of internal energy. This class will teach you another set of tools to add to your toolbox, which will inspire you and set you free as a creative artist.
