WHO: Laura Marsh, 2017 NMWIF Scholarship Winner
WHAT: Laura will talk about documentary from the subjects’ perspective: being a filmmaker and ‘the talent. This will include Laura’s Lessons Learned working on her documentary project “Houseboat Amazon.”
Laura K. Marsh, PhD is a producer and writer with Western Sandblast, Los Angeles. She is an award-winning (Nichols) screenwriter, author of six feature-length screenplays, a musical book (with Tony Moss), and two TV pilots. And – she's a professional scientist!
She lead the "Houseboat Amazon" research expedition to a remote watershed in Brazil to look for a missing a saki monkey (Pithecia vanzolinii). Another result of the expedition is creating a documentary with footage shot while in the rainforest with multiple forms of tech, including drones, camcorders, GoPros and night cameras. Dr. Marsh is a producer under Global Conservation Institute, a 501c3 she co-founded, and subject in the documentary directed by Katie Pyne.
Laura’s 2017 NMWIF Scholarship funds were used for translations (Spanish and Portuguese to English) and transcription of interviews taken during the Houseboat Amazon science expedition for use in the documentary now in post-production.
WHY: this is an excellent way to learn what other members are doing, to meet other members and learn how NMWIF annual scholarship grant programs support projects.
