New Mexico Women in Film invites you to our Santa Fe Brown Bag Lunch and Learn Series

WHEN: Friday, November 2nd, noon-1pm (please allow extra time to park and find the room)

WHO: Laura Marsh, 2017 NMWIF Scholarship Winner

WHAT: Laura will talk about documentary from the subjects’ perspective: being a filmmaker and ‘the talent. This will include Laura’s Lessons Learned working on her documentary project “Houseboat Amazon.”

Laura K. Marsh, PhD is a producer and writer with Western Sandblast, Los Angeles. She is an award-winning (Nichols) screenwriter, author of six feature-length screenplays, a musical book (with Tony Moss), and two TV pilots. And – she's a professional scientist!

She lead the "Houseboat Amazon" research expedition to a remote watershed in Brazil to look for a missing a saki monkey (Pithecia vanzolinii). Another result of the expedition is creating a documentary with footage shot while in the rainforest with multiple forms of tech, including drones, camcorders, GoPros and night cameras. Dr. Marsh is a producer under Global Conservation Institute, a 501c3 she co-founded, and subject in the documentary directed by Katie Pyne.

Laura’s 2017 NMWIF Scholarship funds were used for translations (Spanish and Portuguese to English) and transcription of interviews taken during the Houseboat Amazon science expedition for use in the documentary now in post-production.

WHY: this is an excellent way to learn what other members are doing, to meet other members and learn how NMWIF annual scholarship grant programs support projects.

12–1: Robyn Reede and Doranne Candelaria, 2017 NMWIF Scholarship Winners
1-2: JoAnne Tucker and members of the NMWIF Scholarship Committee will host an info session about the Scholarship Program and how to apply.

You may come to one or both parts of this Brown Bag Lunch & Learn.

WHAT: Robyn and Doranne will share Lessons Learned working on their project Café Destiny. In an attempt to follow the advice of so many out there to create your own work, Robyn and Doranne embarked on the process of creating a web series. On Cafe Destiny and Robyn was a Producer, lead actor, Production Manager and Location Scout. Doranne served as lead actor and a Producer.

Their 2017 NMWIF Scholarship funds were used for the final editing of the project.

Doranne (Godwin) Candelaria has been involved in film & TV in New Mexico as an actress for over 25 years.  She is a long standing member of New Mexico Women in Film and SAG-AFTRA.  She has appeared in numerous film projects, student films and independents, including principal roles in Santa Fe Mysteries (Spark Interactive), The Staircase (CBS TV Movie), Spells (DFM Productions and The Dead Men List (Dane Productions)  Ms. Candelaria also was a co-producer on the documentary "Alhucema - Lavender in the Land of Enchantment"  She has worked as a costumer and fashion designer on many productions in theatre and film  Her training included Drama & Art and Stage Design at UC Irvine. She studied editing at Santa Fe Community College.

Robyn Reede is an actress with over 35 years of experience.  She is a New Mexico native but has lived many other places.  Her career acting credits include Feature and Independent Films, and made for TV movies.  Robyn has also performed theater and improv.  She is a founding board member of NMWIF. In New Mexico Robyn has been cast in the films:  Astronaut Farmer, Tennessee, Maniacts, The Rambler, Priceless, to name a few.

WHY: this is an excellent way to learn what other members are doing, to meet other members and learn how NMWIF annual scholarship grant programs support projects.

The workshop will culminate in short films created by each student.

Albuquerque Screenwriters Group Monthly Tea

Keeping in line with our commitment to support women owned businesses, our June NMWIF ABQ Screenwriters Tea will be at the Vibrance Restaurant, 4500 Silver Ave. SE this coming Friday, June 22 from 6-8pm. Willing screenwriters will practice their pitch in a casual environment. Once all screenwriters have pitched then those present will vote on which pitch is the best. The winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Vibrance restaurant. Vibrance is owned by Karen Hammer proclaimed by Sharon Niederman of the Albuquerque Journal as Albuquerque's raw food Diva.

Aside from pitching, this is primarily a mixer. All those who work in the film industry are welcome.

WHO: Melissa A. Brownell, 2017 NMWIF Scholarship Winner

WHAT: Melissa will share Lessons Learned working on her new film “Boots of My Brother.” A stage coach rides down the Santa Fe trail pass the Glorieta Pass to Santa Fe, two Civil War enemies clash over a pair of Confederate Boots.

Melissa, a classically trained artist lives in Santa Fe. Her writing and producing career began with publishing her novel, “The Gypsy in Spanish Red”. After pitching the story to producers at the Santa Fe Screenwriter’s Conference the novel interest turned to writing screenplays.

Melissa received her NMWIF Scholarship for producing funds for “Boots of My Brother.”

WHY: this is an excellent way to learn what other members are doing, to meet other members and learn how NMWIF annual scholarship grant programs support projects.

NMWIF Screenwriters Group Monthly Tea Mixer

The NMWIF ABQ Screenwriters Group is starting a monthly Tea, affectionately called our monthly NASTea. The Tea is a mixer for locals who have an interest in NM Film. As a way to support local woman owned businesses the Tea will be held at a different location each month. This month the Tea will be at Joliesse Chocolates starting at 6pm on Thursday, May 31. In addition to the Tea a Celtic Band will begin playing at 7pm. Joliesse is located at 6855 4th St NW, Suite C1, ABQ. It is owned and operated by Grace  Lapsys. To encourage our writers we will be having a little contest. Writers who want to take part will be asked a number of questions about their story and after each answer attendees will vote as to whether they would like to hear more of the story. Last writer standing wins a prize. Please come and join us.

WHY: This is an excellent way to learn what other filmmakers are doing, to meet more NMWIF members and learn how our annual scholarship grant programs support projects.

WHO: Erica Nguyen, Director/Producer and 2017 NMWIF Scholarship Grant recipient

WHAT: Erica will share Lessons Learned in the making of her feature documentary "Tejiendo Sombras " filmed in Peru.

Join us in an open dialogue about international filmmaking and the ethics of transmitting the stories of subject communities. What does it takes to make a road documentary in Peru? Glean some insight through a snapshot of Cajamarca's artisan activists.
