President's Letter

September 2017

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Film and Media Conference last weekend and to welcome so many new members into our organization. Always a great opportunity to talk about the good work we do in elevating the profile of women working in film in New Mexico. In line with that mission we’ve got some great events coming up as we move into Fall …

On September 17th we’re holding our annual Sage Award along with announcing the winners of our scholarship grants. Each year we choose a woman in our community who has made a significant contribution to the industry with her work. Past honorees have included, JoEdna Boldin, Monique Anair and Julia Cameron. This year we are thrilled to celebrate past NMWIF President and  former Program Director for the NM Film Office, Trish Lopez. Trish started her career at Sony Pictures and then scored a choice role in the Global Management Executive Training program at Warner Bros. She’s been a high profile figure in the New Mexico film scene for some time now and since 2015 she is the founder and CEO of Teeniors, a mutli-award winning organization that connects tech-savvy teens with senior citizens in the community.  We’re excited to have Nick Maniatis from the NM Film Office attending to introduce Trish and we look forward to honoring her for all of her great work – so far!

Also that evening we will announce the winners of our 2017 scholarship grants. We have a large field of applicants this year looking to help fund endeavors from continuing career development to finishing funds for film and TV projects plus a $500 scholarship in post production from NMPA. These scholarships are available to any member in good standing and we are happy that so many of you went through the application process with hopes of taking advantage of one of the strongest examples we have of our mission to support you in your work. In line with further financial support, that afternoon we thank our very generous member, Susan Baker-Dillingham who will be funding a major new scholarship starting in 2018 for women in mid-life making a career transition into the film industry.  You won’t want to miss the announcement of the exciting plans we have for that new avenue of support.  A major shout out to all of our generous donors from Christina Gopal’s $500 to Mel MacKaron’s $25, every dollar makes a difference in helping our members pursue their dreams.

We’ll also take the opportunity on the 17th to acknowledge and thank all of our volunteers in the past year for the great contribution that they have made towards helping everything run so smoothly. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization so please join us that afternoon in celebrating all that you do.

A “save the date” for all of our actor members out there is Sunday, November 19th when we will again host our famous Mentor Mania with 6 talent agents and casting directors. Space is EXTREMELY limited for this first come first served event with priority given to current members so watch our Facebook page and email blasts about pending registration.

Honors, scholarships, acknowledgements and of course, great networking with refreshments on September 17 at WESST in Albuquerque. We look forward to seeing you there.

Keep Making Media,

Christine McHugh,
NMWIF President
