President's Letter

October 2017

Dear Members, Friends & Supporters,

Our Sage Award and Scholarship event last month was a huge success. What a treat to honor longtime NMWIF member and huge contributor to “the greater feminine” in our state, Trish Lopez.  I loved what last year’s Sage Award winner, Julia Cameron said in introducing her, that we all have the opportunity to be each other’s “artistic mirrors.” Really brought home how much I love being in reflection with all of you. Then, our scholarship grant recipients each told the audience about the projects that they would be dedicating their monies to. They all spoke with such passion and about a such wide array of projects that it’s unanimous among the NMWIF Board - our favorite thing to do is to give away money! And thanks to Susan Baker Dillingham and her donation of $13,000, that’s going to be even easier and more fun with a $1000 scholarship for woman making a career transition in midlife into the film industry starting next year. We were also thrilled to acknowledge the hard work of our volunteers with a little gift. Thanks for helping to make NMWIF what it is today.

November sees two very exciting events for our membership. First is the surprise opportunity to meet with Helene Granqvist, President of Sweden’s Woman in Film and Television who will come to speak to us about the amazing success in Sweden’s film industry in bringing about 50/50 gender parity, the only nation in the world that is currently enjoying this kind of equality. Linda McDill and I met Helene in London at the WIFTI President’s Summit in May and the seed was planted to have her come speak to the Northern New Mexico chapter as she makes her way across the U.S. talking about how this was accomplished in her home country. Helene is a live wire and a contributing author of the booklet, No Sexism Please, We’re Swedish. A conversation with her, facilitated by Linda McDill will be held on Friday evening, November 10th at 6:30 pm at the El Rey CourtInn in Santa Fe. Watch our Facebook page and e-blasts for more details.

Our most anticipated event of the year for our Actor members will be held on Sunday, November 19 in Albuquerque. It’s Mentor Mania, with 24 or so lucky members getting the chance to speak with Talent Agents; Tina Presley, Lynette O’Connor and Carissa Mitchell and Casting Directors; Faith Hibbs Clark, Kathryn Brinks and Jo Edna Boldin. First Come, First Served sign-ups open on November 1st, so watch our Facebook page and look for our e-blasts for more information. Tickets are $40 for members, and $50 for non-members. We fully expect to expand our offerings to actors in the coming year, and we’d love your input on what events you think might further your development and career. We expect to have a survey out to you soon but in the meantime, please grab a Board member at one of the events to let them know your ideas.

It’s been a full and exciting 2017 for NMWIF so far, and the best is yet to come.

Keep Making Media,

Christine McHugh,
NMWIF President
