President's Letter

May 2017

Dear Members, Friends & Supporters,

“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” – Ryunosuke Satoro

NMWIF is all about forging partnerships with other groups and individuals to further all of our professional goals. April saw the collaboration between NMWIF, four communities, three Universities/Colleges and multiple individuals to bring our semi-annual- Film Fiesta to venues around the state. With a program of films by member filmmakers and guest student filmmakers we were able to create deeper working relationships with new populations who are interested in collaborating with and championing the works of New Mexico media artists. We value and appreciate all the volunteers, Judges and staff at NM Highlands University, South Broadway Cultural Center, NM State University and Santa Fe University of Art and Design who gave their time to assist in the production of the NMWIF Fiesta! 2017.

Also in April was the NMFF and NM Girls Make Movies event at the Governor’s Mansion to award prize money to the winners of the Scholastic Screenwriting Scholarships and the screenplay winner for Girls Make Movies. We have always had a strong relationship with Dirk Norris and the New Mexico Film Foundation and it was a pleasure to see them in their support of up and coming young people in the indie film world with the stage readings of four short screenplays. A natural alliance has formed between NMWIF and NMGMM in the production of the their winner, Sara Casaus’ screenplay BOTTLED UP, a quirky and thoughtful short that is wonderfully producible in our location. Shooting is scheduled for two days in early June and we at NMWIF want to provide all of the mentors that they can use from our membership to act as on set (or post studio) shadow advisors to these young women in all of the different capacities that are needed. Please contact us if you are interested in helping these talented young women.

Coming up, on May 7 th is NMWIF’s workshop with NYC Casting Director, Julie Tucker. We are so grateful to Julie for donating her time in holding this class as a fundraiser for our organization. She is an extremely successful and high-profile Casting Director with the casting of such shows as Sneaky Pete, Six Feet Under and Nurse Jackie among her many credits. She’s bringing her wealth of knowledge to our community by working with 14 of our most talented and accomplished talent in front of an audience of auditors in order the give the largest number of people possible the benefit of her casting expertise. There are still spots available to watch Julie at work and learn some of the secrets of making the most favorable impact possible when you walk into that casting session. Please check out the information below to learn how you can be a part of this workshop. All of the proceeds for this event will go towards the NMWIF Scholarship Fund.

It’s Spring in New Mexico, so come snow, sleet, rain, wind, mud or sunshine team up with the people that inspire you and…

Keep Making Media,

Christine McHugh,
NMWIF President
