February 2015 Newsletter

Letter From the President:

Dear Members, Friends and Supporters,

I can truly say we have kicked off our 10th Anniversary year with a bang - or rather with a blast! Our fantastic January birthday party exceeded our expectations by far. We expected around 50 people and well over 100 showed up. Fun time! It was SRO for Robin Roffer's energetic and inspirational talk (afterward she sold all the books she brought), we shot lots of great video vignettes for our Happy Birthday reel and there was enough cake for all. Networking in abundance all around! Thanks to so many members, friends and colleagues who attended and who assisted in producing the event. But wait, there's more to come!

Our February Event is all day Monday, February 23 - Film & Media Day at the Roundhouse & Jean Cocteau Cinema. Please see the announcement and schedule below. So proud of our NMWIF members, Puck Stair & Jo Edna Boldin, who will be part of the great info sessions during the day. F&M Day is the best event all year to network and to see our mighty NM Film/TV Industry gather to show the State Legislators and each other that the Industry is alive and kicking here in NM. Come join the fun. Be sure to come by our NMWIF table and visit! By the way, IATSE 480 has offered 1/2 price tickets to their Legislative After-Party (5-7pm @ Pink Adobe) to card-carrying NMWIF members. Always an amazing event. See you there.

NMWIF Board of Directors elections will be happening this month. Nominations are open for two seats. See the info below and please consider nominating yourself or another worthy member.

So many wonderful things going on and in the planning for our 10th anniversary. We are truly celebrating all year - hope you'll join us!

Kindest regards,

This year’s Sundance Film Festival, which came to a close in Park City, Utah, has been hailed as the ‘Year of Women’ with a number of films by and about women surrounded by positive buzz during the festival. UK directors Kim Longinotto (pictured above) and Louise Osmond picked up the World Cinema Directing Award - Documentary and World Cinema Audience Award - Documentary respectively at the festival’s awards ceremony for their films Dreamcatchers and Dark Horse. Congratulations to them both.
Other highlights from the festival included our friends at Women in Film LA awarding $33k to female filmmakers; a powerhouse panel on storytelling featuring Lena Dunham, Kristen Wiig, Jenji Kohan and Mindy Kaling, which you can watch in full here; and two-time Oscar winning actress and producer Jane Fonda suggesting to an audience at the festival that women need to “shame” gender-biased studios.

His father (Richard Crenna) is called to service, and it is up to Joshua to help take charge of the family home, as his mother (Claire Bloom) falls into a well of self-pity, longing for the amenities that were available to her at the family home in Alabama, while falling prey to a sycophantic cousin who mooches off Joshua’s father’s generosity. Co-stars Desi Arnaz, Jr. (nominated for a Golden Globe) and Cathy Burns help introduce Joshua to his new life in New Mexico.
