January 2015 Newsletter

Letter From the President:

Dear Members, Friends and Supporters,

Happy New Year and Happy Birthday to us! This year marks the 10th anniversary of our New Mexico branch of Women in Film & TV International. We are planning some extraordinary events throughout the year to celebrate and hope that you'll join us for many of them.

To kick off the new year, our January event features an exciting motivational talk by branding specialist, Robin Roffer. We'll also have birthday cake and a few other surprises. Come be inspired to set and reach new goals with us this year.

The Judges' Picks are in! Big congratulations to the 3 finalists of 'The Woman in the Story' NMWIF Screenwriting Competition and a sincere thank you to all 39 of you who submitted screenplays. Great response for the revival of our NMWIF Athena Award. Thank you our esteemed judges, Michael Zeilik, Judy Hennessey and Bradd Hopkins for your time and careful decision-making. See details and Finalist names below.

The Sage Award Committee is busy creating a ballot of nominees. All voting members will receive an email ballot during January to choose this year's honoree. This award was created by NMWIF to honor a person who is dedicated to the 'greater feminine' and active in supporting women in the film and TV industry. We are very proud of our recipients of the Sage Awards since its inception: Shirley MacLaine, Lisa Strout, Ann Lerner, Ali MacGraw, Ana Gallegos y Reinhart & Jo Edna Boldin. The winner of the majority of member votes will be awarded the honor at a special celebration this year.

One of our biggest events and celebrations this year will be our NMWIF FILM FIESTA! in July. We're going to screen films of all types made by our past and present members. If you have been a member anytime over the last 10 years, you are eligible to enter your film(s). We are very excited to screen the films in 3 NM cities. Our vice-president, Shelene Bridge is producing the Film Fiesta. We'll need lots of help, so let us know if you'd like to volunteer for one of the (fun) Film Fiesta! committees.

There are so many wonderful things New Mexico Women in Film will offer you this year, thanks to our most fabulous NMWIF Board of Directors & our Administrative Assistant, Reina. It takes a village to keep this organization moving and grooving, so we are truly a working board. We also have many interesting volunteer opportunities with NMWIF and for some of the various film festivals around the state. Let this be the year you get involved. I think any of our board members or volunteers would attest to the rewards and friendships gained from working together towards great goals.

So here we go - headfirst into our tenth year of NM Women in Film. Come celebrate with us!

Kindest regards,

SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971.   SHE’S BEAUTIFUL takes us from the founding of NOW, with ladies in hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of W.I.T.C.H. (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!). Artfully combining dramatizations, performance and archival imagery, the film recounts the stories of women who fought for their own equality, and in the process created a world-wide revolution, capturing the spirit of the time --- thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.

That story still resonates today for women who are facing new challenges around reproductive rights and sexual violence, as the film shows present-day activists creating their generation's own version of feminism. SHE’S BEAUTIFUL WHEN SHE’S ANGRY is a film about activists, made to inspire women and men to work for feminism and human rights.

Mother O’Keefe
Thursday, January 8
7pm - $5 donation
The Performance Space
El Dorado, NM

On Thursday, January 8 at 7pm, REEL NEW MEXICO will present  'Mother O'Keeffe', narrated by former New Mexico resident, Marsha Mason and produced and directed by El Dorado resident, Richard Startzman, who will be our special guest. This film is one hour long and was released in 2007 and offers a very different look at artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Controversy and an art history mystery are at the heart of this documentary about Georgia O'Keeffe. Mother O'Keeffe - The Other Georgia O'Keeffe movie examines the theory that the "Canyon Suite," a famed series of watercolors, wasn't the work of O'Keeffe.   Instead, her foster son and protégé, a young Hispanic boy at the time of the paintings' creation, may be responsible for these celebrated works.

We will also screen a historical short film, THE FLYING PADRE, shot in eastern New Mexico by famed director, Stanley Kubrick. Additionally, guests are now able to order and bring food and drink from La Plancha and enjoy it in the Performance Space, offering a casual dinner and a movie type event. Admission discount for non Eldorado residents!

A fun blend of comedy, action, and scenes from known and little known movies, this program is back by special request after a successful screening as part of the REEL NEW MEXICO series  last October.
