“Blatant Attempts at Understanding” by Melanie Zipin
Performed by the Virus Theater of Silver City

Word travels fast in a series of scenes, monologues, and dramatic sketches that take the audience on an introspective journey, combining a sense of place (the high deserts of NM) with a quest for purpose.

Finding beauty, even solace, in the everyday, Melanie Zipin composes her songs and stories from the material that surrounds her. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Philadelphia, Melanie Zipin is a mixed media artist, performer and singer songwriter with three CD’s of original music to her credit.

Virus Theater has been producing live, original theater in Silver City, NM for 20 years. The mission of Virus Theater is to create relevant original live theater that is accessible to our diverse community, and to provide educational opportunities for adults and children in the performing arts. Virus Theater’s vision is to bring people together through theater to better understand our shared humanity and to inspire individual and collective growth.

SWIFT Summit

The Southern Women in Film & Television Summit (SWIFT) will provide a unique forum for unifying the creative objectives of women residing in Southern states via professional advancement, mentorship and collaboration. The event will assemble luminaries from all areas of the entertainment industry to explore a variety of topics that greatly impact women: from human rights and women’s leadership, to storytelling across platforms. Voice + Speech: Intro to Dialects with Catharine Pilafas

In Voice + Speech and Introduction to Dialects, actors will explore and garner the tools to free their natural human voice.  Actors will learn the Kristin Linklater and Rudolf Laban methods and develop awareness to recognize and shift unnecessary tension in the face, voice and body to evoke “relaxed readiness.” The class will also introduce the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) which is the basis of learning dialects. The dialects that will be taught: British, Irish, Russian, and German. Actors will practice a dialect of their choice in an assigned scene or monologue to be performed for the final class.
