THE BUSINESS OF DOCUMENTARIES

If your passion is documentary filmmaking, come meet and hear from our panel of experts.

Dr. Sharyn Udall is an Art Historian, writer and lecturer. She is author of Carr, O’Keeffe, Kahlo: Places of their Own, which has been transformed into Bone, Wind, Fire, a wonderful documentary produced by NFB of Canada. The Bone portion was shot locally.  You can even see the film before the Event on May 12 at 7PM at The Screen, 1600 St. Michaels Dr. in Santa Fe. (see more details below)

Jillan Spitzmiller is an award-winning documentary Director/Editor/Camera Operator, in short, the whole deal. Her film Shakespeare Behind Bars, released in 2005, has been shown around the world. Her company, DocuMentors can be found on the web.

Dyanna Taylor is a cinematographer of countless documentaries, including Buck, Sky Island, Agnes Martin, Back to the World, and Sky Dancer. She has worked all around the world and we are fortunate that she will be home in time for our panel.

Talia Victoria Kosh is President and Founder of NM Lawyers for the Arts. Talia works with artists, filmmakers and arts organizations on a pro bono basis, assisting them with various legal issues. Talia has also served on the boards of Creative Santa Fe, Intermezzo at the Santa Fe Opera and Global Center for Cultural Entrepreneurship.

INSPIRED BY THE BOOK BY SHARYN UDALL, "CARR, O'KEEFFE, KAHLO: PLACES OF THEIR OWN"

BONE WIND FIRE is a 30 minute long evocative journey into the hearts, minds and eyes of Georgia O'Keeffe, Emily Carr and Frida Kahlo - three of the 20th century's most remarkable artists.

Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted in the sun-baked clarity of the American Southwest; Emily Carr in the lush jungled green of the BC rainforests; and Frida Kahlo in the hot and dusty clamor of Mexico City. Each woman had her own response to her environment, to the people that surrounded her and to the artistic or practical challenges she faced in wringing beauty and truth from her particular time and place. BONE WIND FIRE uses the women's own words, taken from their letters and diaries, to reveal three individual creative processes in all their subtle and fascinating variety. In thirty carefully prepared and creatively photographed minutes, the film captures the view through the artists' eyes.

"A work of art in itself."
- Michael Reid, Victoria Times

"A rich impressionistic essay on nothing less than the artist's place in the universe."
– Kathryn Monk, Vancouver Sun

Joins Race for the Cure

New Mexico Women in Film is a New Mexico-based non-profit outreach organization committed to the professional development and achievement of women in the film and television industry through mentorship, networking, education and community service.

This year, we’re partnering with the NM branch of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (http://www.komencnm.org/), honoring members of our industry who have struggled with breast cancer.

We have reached out to the larger NM film and media community to join our efforts to demonstrate the vibrancy of our industry and its commitment to our community. The response has been enthusiastic.

In our commitment to mentor upcoming filmmakers, we intend to create a promotional film project to benefit the NM Komen Foundation. The film will consist of several vignettes, produced by industry professional mentors and NMWIF member mentees (men can join, too).

We’re also proud to announce that we’re fielding a team to participate in NM’s Race for the Cure. Team members can run, walk, volunteer or even sleep in for the Cure. Our goal is to field a team of at least 50 members and raise $5000, 75% of which will stay in New Mexico (with the remaining 25% going to cancer research).
